You are viewing a WWII era sweetheart pin. It is made of clear celluloid material, in the shape of the WWII unifrom cloth badge used on the uniforms. It has a small RCAF
insignia inserted into the celuloid material. Some have concluded that these pendants were made from the material used for the cockpits of the WWII aircraft. The really unique feature of this
sweetheart pendant is its wing shape. This item is still in excellent condition for its age, except the attachment device is missing. View scans for details.

Sweetheart badges and pins were often given to a female loved one, by their soldier lover, son, or father. They could have been supplied, for a cost, by the
quartermaster or by a private organization, such as Birks. Most were simply converted uniform devises from the regiment, and were available in the tuck shops. Many, if not all of the
battalions and regiments had this type of inspirational badge. As the war years rolled on, many of the givers were lost, and did not return. As you might imagine, these items became a very
cherished remembrance by their recipients. Consequently, we generally call them "sweethearts".
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them.
