You are viewing an extremely rare pre 1900 era large bonnet badge for the 38th Dufferin Rifles . This design pattern has some Masonic indicators. This large badge is made of browning brass. Both horizontal lugs are original and intact. Established in 1866 to fight the American Fenians.
The Dufferin Rifles of Canada originated in Brantford, Ontario on 28 September 1866 when the '38th "Brant Battalion of Infantry"' was authorized to be formed. It was redesignated: '38th "Brant" Battalion of Infantry' on 30 November 1866; then it became the '38th "Brant" Battalion of Rifles' on 24 March 1871; then the '38th "Brant" Battalion or "Dufferin Rifles"' on 3 July 1874; After this it was called the '38th Battalion "Dufferin Rifles of Canada"' on 28 September 1883. (All of these name changes had a significance in the history of the Regiment...1866 was the Fenian raid period. 1883 was the Riel Rebellion, etc.) Study the unsung, proud history of the Canadian Army!
At the turn of the century it came to be called the '38th Regiment "Dufferin Rifles of Canada"' (8 May 1900). After WWI , on 1 May 1920, another name change, and it was called the 'The Dufferin Rifles of Canada' . On 15 December 1936, it was amalgamated with 'The Haldeman Rifles' and 'C Company' of the '3rd Machine Gun Battalion, CMGC'.
