You are viewing a vintage CEF WWI 196th Battalion cap badge. Made of browning copper, with a straight pin attachment in good order, which may indicate an officer grade badge. These are high quality designs, made with the stamping method,with no chips or dents. This badge shows highly defined highlites that stand out in shiny copper. Note the coat of arms motif which appears in the center of the badge.In the design there can be found the university crests of the 4 universities in western Canada at the time.
History: This battalion was formed in Manitoba with headquarters in Winnipeg, during the summer of 1916.The members were from the various universities in the west of Canada.These 1008 members of the 196th sailed for England in November of 1916. (The North Atlantic in Winter???) Upon arrival they became part of the 19th Reserve Battalion supplying reinforcements to other battalions fighting in France.
