The 240th Battalion was first organized during the summer recruiting campaign of 1916. The headquarters was in Renfrew Ontario, just west of the capital. The battalion was one of the smallest in the cef comprised of 389 members. On may 3rd 1917, under command of Lt Colonel E.J Watt, they sailed for England. Upon arrival the battalion members were absorbed into the 6th Reserve Infantry Battalion supplying reinforcements as necessary to the other battalions in the field.
