You are viewing an rare RNWMP (Royal North West Mounted Police) cap badge. This badge is most likely Edwardian (1900 period), and of course quite scarce. The roundel on the back of this specimen. shows clearly its Gaunt & sons, Montreal hallmark. It is a highly detailed copper example, and is in excellent condition, with its design features still clear and distinct, however a previous owner has removed the lugs most likely for display.
The "North West Mounted Police" was the original name for the illustrious red coated police force that became an icon of the development of Western Canada. Established by Queen Victoria, this police force received the addition of the "Royal" to their name in 1905, under Edward VII. In the 1920's they were renamed the "Royal Canadian Mounted Police".
