The scans above show a Royal Winnipeg Grenadiers brass cap badge. It is in very good condition with both lug type fasteners in good order. An original badge. Hallmarked "Wm Skully, Montreal"
Some History: In WWI the Winnipeg Grenadiers fielded the 11th CEF battalion, the 78th CEF battalion & the 100th CEF battalion which later in the war became part of the 10th Machine Gun Battalion...
When WWII began in 1939, the regiment served in Jamaica and Bermuda on garrison duty from May 1940 to October 1941. On 27 October 1941 it embarked for Hong Kong, where it was destroyed while fighting in defense of the colony during the Battle of Hong Kong, which began on the 8th of December and continued until the 25 December 1941. Most of the survivors were shipped off to work camps in Japan, but some died when a US sub sank one of the prison ships.
VC's were again the order of the day...
Company Sergeant-Major John R. Osborn VC (January 2, 1899 December 19, 1941) was a 42-year-old Warrant Officer Second Class, and the CSM of A Company. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in the fighting for Hong Kong on 19 December 1941. His Victoria Cross citation reads, in part: "The enemy threw a grenade which landed in a position where it was impossible to pick it up and return it in time. Shouting a warning to his comrades this gallant Warrant Officer threw himself on the grenade which exploded killing him instantly." His self-sacrifice undoubtedly saved the lives of many others"...
