This battalion was formed in Eastern Ontario, with headquarters in Ottawa. A late war formation from February of 1917. An interesting feature of this battalion is its size, relative to those others formed in the last years of the war. Most of the late war formations were smaller groups some less than 400 men. The 257th however, had a contingent of 931 members, and could be considered on the large side of the general battalion numbers. This battalion served in the field in France as the 7th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops until the end of the war, and was disbanded in the fall of 1920 .
